Six-speed automatic? What is this, 2008? Any particular reasoning for not the ZF8?

Is this a typo or is BMW...*cough* slow?

Probably to reduce drivetrian resistance to improve the MPG. Not to mention that with an electric motor, you really don't need extra gears, since the torque band is constant. The ZF, good as it is, may just add weight and cost unnecessarily with only a very marginal performance gain.

Ah, I see.

Just wondering, because the old Steptronic 6AT BMW used on the E90...sucked.

I am more interested in this statement:

As a result, the output of 154 hp per liter of displacement is the highest of and engine produced entirely in-house but the BMW Group.

Have they already forgotten the F1 motors they made in the 80's? Some could put out nearly 1,000 hp per liter.

(I realize they mean production road car motor but that is not what it says)

On top of the other comments, I think its worth noting that the mid engine layout prevents them from using the standard ZF 8spd found in everything.

I think they meant made in-house by the BMW group. So, new record for BMW themselves. But then keep in mind the S55 will definitely be able to break 450 HP with a 3.0L I-6...if not stock, then with a tune.
